Our December/January winner jespah throws down the following intriguing challenge for you all. Decisions, Decisions
Decisions fuel timelines. We zig instead of zag, and we might just change the course of history.
Some decisions are bigger than others. Whether you wear a yellow top instead of a blue one, do empires rise and fall because of that? What if you marry suitor #2 instead of suitor #1, or you don't marry at all? Or what if you're the leader of a great land, and you decide to go to war, or not?
The challenge is to show how a decision changed the course of a timeline, possibly, if you like, show the alternative, the what if scenario. All genres, all characters, all series, all films, all universes, etc. are welcome, for these decisions might even hop over from one series to another, or between universes. Let's see what happens when a switch is flipped, and what that really does to people.
Challenge will close Monday 27th February and thereafter voting will open. Hop over to the challenge discussion thread on the forums to ask any questions or make any comments.

Congratulations to our September/October Challenge winner, Gul Rejal!
Our champion has suggested "Silence" as our next challenge topic. Says she:
"In any form and for whatever reason; for a moment or for a long time; caused by surprise, shock, happiness or something completely else."
So, there you have it: Our November challenge. Find the silence in your story universe and show it to us ... where it came from, why it's there, how it makes your characters feel.
Challenge will run until Friday, December 2 at 11:59 PM EST. That weekend, we will vote. (We'll probably take December off from the Challenges due to the usual holiday craziness, so whoever wins this one will name January's challenge.)
Good luck! Enjoy!

Nerys Ghemor, our challenger for this month, writes:
I was thinking of a Trek XI-based challenge, but I want to keep it as open as possible so that everyone--both the lovers and the haters--feel like they can participate.
The rule is that you must write in a universe where Nero destroyed the Kelvin and destroyed Vulcan. However, what you do from there is up to you. If you liked the movie, you can continue its story either in that time period or any future period. You can even have your original characters but they must be in that AU. If you didn't like the movie, as long as you keep the two specified elements, your challenge is to do it better. Hated something? Fix it! That can either be addressed by writing in the movie itself OR setting it after that time frame. As long as the specified two changes to the timeline occurred, it's fair game.
There you have it, folks. Our destinies have changed. It's an alternate reality ... and we're going to write in it. 8)
Challenge will run through Friday, October 21, 11:59 PM EDT. After that, we'll vote. Discussion thread to be found here.
Good luck!

The Great Review Hunt returns for 2011 with a changed-up format, but the same goal: to review neglected stories on Ad Astra, and jump on the new ones to keep the site humming with activity and love for the art of fic'ing and poetry.

Good luck and good hunting to all!

August Challenge VOTE
A big thank you to everyone who participated in this challenge, and special thanks to Samuel Pengraff who picked a real winner of a topic! Eleven entries just might be a record! It's especially wonderful to see so many newly joined authors participating.
Because we have so many quality entries for people to read, voting will stay open for five (5) days to give everyone a chance to consider their options.
Check the voting thread HERE!

The winner of our last challenge, way back in April (
), Samuel Pengraff, has come up with the following topic for your consideration:
How about a ‘Cures and their diseases’ topic? Either big diseases or small, your story can be dramatic or humorous. Someone comes down with something embarrassing, or with an infection that has the potential of wiping out an entire race, or anything in between.
Any characters, any Trekverse.
So, folks, there are your marching orders. I hope all your Doctor-type characters are ready for this.
The challenge will run through the end of the month, with voting taking place the first week of September. Good luck!
The forum thread on the challenge is here! Entries can be submitted to here! Thanks to all who participate and read in the challenge.
Remember too the forum has weekly prompts for you to check out and hone your writing skills on. Good luck and enjoy.

Last month's challenge was a great success and provided terrific reading. The cunning challenge for April as suggested by last month's worthy winner, Lil black dog, is Role Reversal.
Any characters, any universe, just have one (or maybe more) character doing another’s (or each others') job for whatever reason – illness, injury, shore leave – the possibilities are endless.
Or even, any character doing a job that is usually not theirs – Kirk as a nursemaid, Spock as a babysitter, McCoy as an engineer, (I'm a TOS girl, but you get the drift) etc. Again, the wackier, the better.
The challenge will run until Saturday, April 30th. All participants are welcome and good luck! This should prove to be very interesting.
Submit your challenges here!

Our February winner, TheLoneRedshirt, writes:
For the March challenge, I was thinking of "phobias." It would be interesting to see how characters deal with discovering/facing/coping with paralyzing fears (specific, not general). It could be fear of heights, bugs, enclosed spaces, water, etc. Yes, I know that Starfleet (and likely Cardassian) training would screen out much of this . . . but not all. Such stories could be very serious or quite comical.
There you have it, folks ... our March challenge. We're not looking for rational fear here, like fear in the face of Borg assimilation or a Doomsday Machine run amok -- we're looking for Pulaski's fear of transporters, O'Brien's fear of spiders (conquered!), Worf's fear of the lowly Tribble. What deep-seated, personal, possibly irrational fear (or fears) did your chosen character's psych evaluation miss? Let's read about it. No word limit, any story universe.
Challenge will run through 11:59 PM EST, Friday, March 25, 2011. Voting will be that weekend.
I can't wait to see what you all come up with for this one.

Check out the challenge thread here and the challenge entries here.

The challenge for February is, as suggested by Enterprise1981, "Overcoming Personal Prejudice". What prejudices do your characters hold? With all the different cultures coming together in the world of Trek, there are bound to be clashes. We see it between humans and Cardassians, Vulcans and humans, Klingons and ... um, well Klingons and EVERYONE.
So, tell a story of how one of your characters overcame a personal prejudice.
Challenge runs now through 11:59 PM EST, Friday, February 25, 2011. After that, we'll vote and hopefully get the next challenge up by the first of March. Good luck!
Follow any thoughts here in the challenge thread.

We've all seen the classic movie (or at least I HOPE we all have!) "It's a Wonderful Life." Jimmy Stewart plays George Bailey, a down-on-his-luck banker who wishes he had never been born, and is shown by an angel-in-training what life would be like for the people around him if he had never existed. The results are poignant, to say the least.
Lil black dog suggests:
"In honor of the holidays, I'd like to see a George Bailey-esque moment: take a character either from one of the series or your own universe and write what would happen if that person weren't there, either for a pivotal scene, episode, or gone from that universe altogether."
So, let's do it for our characters (or the canon characters we love). Pick a character, any character, and show what life is like without that person -- for a moment, an event, or even an eternity. Maybe we'll miss them, maybe we won't. Either way, it should prove enlightening.
Deadline for this challenge is 11:59 EST on Sunday, January 23, 2011. That makes room for the holidays and plenty of writing, with another week for voting and sorting out the next challenge before February arrives.
Happy writing and good luck!

In other news...
Our lovely forums now have a new subforum for a weekly free-write challenge, run by the creative force of nature known as kes7. So, whenever you feel like just running on a prompt and going wherever it takes you, head on over and throw in!
--SLWatson on 06 Dec 2010 18:36 2 Comments
"Writers take a moment in Trek history, be it canon or their own stories/universe, where a pivotal decision is reversed and then write on the effects. I could even give some prompts:
- TOS: What if Spock had killed Kirk during 'Amok Time?'
- TNG: What if Riker had not made it off of Nervala II in 'Second Chances?'
- DS9: What if Bashir did graduate as Valedictorian and ended up on Lexington?
- VOY: What if Kes never left and had to work with Seven?
- ENT: What if Trip hadn't died?"
Kes7, our challenge administrating guru of late, goes on to add:
"So ... take any turning point or critical moment in Trek history (canon or fanon) and turn it on its head. Show us what happens. Any universe, any crew, no word limit. New entries only for the first two weeks, then we'll open it up to older ones if we don't have four new entries. Deadline is the 26th at 11:59 PM EST. Voting will push into December for this one, partly because of the late start and partly because of American Thanksgiving ... a lot of us might be suffering from turkey coma for a couple of days."
You can find the challenge here and the forum discussion thread here. Have fun, and happy writing!
--SLWatson on 06 Nov 2010 21:54 0 Comments
"Friends -- they can be closer than family, or they can be 'frenemies.' Sometimes they stick by you in the worst of times; sometimes they struggle with envy over your successes.
"The challenge is: Write a piece that highlights a friendship. Maybe you'll show how it came to be, or the big moment that cemented it forever. Or maybe you'll show how it ended, or how they worked through some difficulty to let their bond prevail. Whatever you do, the focus here is on friends. No word limit, any crew or universe is fair game, but new stories only for the first two weeks. After that, it'll be opened up to old ones if we have fewer than four new entries.
"Deadline is October 21, to leave one week for voting and a couple of days to get the next challenge topic sorted out. Good luck and happy writing!"

A new challenge as Submitted by gojirob and trekfan. Essentially take a character(s) from a canonical Star Trek universe and plop them down in another one created by yourself. Read here for more info. The challenge ends April 20, 2010.
In addition, the Mad March Hares Review Hunt comes to a close. The reviews are in and our winner is kes7 with over 1800 points. As a reward, she'll get to have a story featured on the front page for a bit and she gets a photomanip request from me. Thanks to all who partook reading and reviewing. It's what the site is all about.
And a little reminder that we still have the Ad Astra Art Challenge. Not much of a response thus far but there's still lots of time left to get the creative juices going.
Regardless, have fun, read some of our fab stories, write a few fab stories, get chatting and reviewing, and pat yourselves on the back for being awesome members - cos that's what you are.
