(2246) - If you believe that the 23rd century is a perfect utopia and none of the things that exist now will exist then, then this isn't the story for you. It is, however, a reasonably optimistic tale. It's not tightly scripted or plotted, it's just another of those 'life is close to the ground' stories that's more about the characters than anything else.

Bio: Born 8/66, a mere three weeks before the TOS premiere, and was like as not being held by my Mom as it played. A near-lifelong resident of the Jersey Shore, a place with more diners, eateries and just plain food joints per capita than I care to rank. A lifelong ST and Godzilla fan, my magnum opus, The Ancient Destroyer Cycle, combines the two in an apocalyptic AU with not a little animanga influence thrown in. I also write humor pieces, and a M*A*S*H* X-over cycle. I have also written for Orion Press, mainly in a series set right after the opening of 'ST:Generations', and with Joe Manno of USS Liberty, a DS9/Voyager-era OCC, set aboard the third Sovereign-class vessel. My goal is to become a real bo--errr--writer. :D

Aside from my loving almost any winter story (Winter's about the only time we NJ Shore residents get any peace), I couldn't help but laugh to think about zombies and Simon Pegg. Slice of life, indeed, fresh from the oven.
Author's Response: LOL! Wrong Scott by awhile (this was written, I think, before Pegg was even cast in the new movie), but I'm glad you liked it! Thank you!

The great irony being that it was Sam and Aurelian who were lost to her, and not in any sort of battle, or even in space. Rocky, I'm very sure a conversation almost exactly like this took place in TOS canon, and I thank you for bringing it to life and posting it.
Author's Response: Hey, Rob, nice to see you here! Glad you liked my take on casa Kirk and what doubtless were some of the undercurrents surrounding Jim's decision.

This was one of the subjects I had long wondered about, when it came to Voyager. You did a masterful job bringing Noah to life, and showing his profound regrets and desire to move on from his mistakes. This is one of the whys and wherefores of fic, and you have cause to be justly proud.
Author's Response: Thanks for the kind words! I wrote this story nearly 10 years ago I think, and I'm so glad it holds up. I hadn't realised you were here on AdAstra, too for some reason. I'm now rushing off to add "Lake of Fire" to the Pike/Number One Masterlist :)

As the Federation returns to the Delta Quadrant eight years after the the USS Voyager destroyed the Borg unicomplex and a key transwarp hub, the crew of the USS Tesseract -- the fleet's largest and most advanced ship -- has no idea what they'll find there.
Just as they launch their seven-year mission, they stumble across a mystery that will soon unfold into an opportunity -- or a nightmare of epic proportions. Loyalties are tested, political intrigue abounds, and the Tesseract's ex-Borg first officer will finally seize control of his own destiny ... and perhaps that of the entire quadrant.

Very creepy and very HPL. Especially disturbing in that the Pagh Wraiths weren't even truly players in this. Bonus points for O'Brien not being the chew toy. Having dabbled in eldritch cosmic horror fic, I know a good story when I see one, and this was good.
Author's Response: Thank you very much! HPL was of course a huge influence for this story. I can't get enough of that pulp style horror and proto-sci fi. I read it as an early teen and again as a much older adult, and this time around I had a much greater appreciation for the genius of Lovecraft and those who wrote in his Mythos. O'Brien suffers enough as it is, it seems, so I felt no need to contribute to that. I'm glad you enjoyed, and I appreciate the review.

I'll bet Garak never thought he'd see greener grass and also see it again when he came back. I'm always suspicious of stories where people stay behind in the AU, so Garak's return made perfect sense.
I did regret that we never saw his survival skills in dealing with the CoO Bajorans, but I think we know he'd get through that, too. If you ever follow this up, send Kira.
Author's Response:
Garak could never justify staying behind in that Cardassia given what was happening in his Cardassia. I personally couldn't see him ever making that decision given his development on DS9 and in Robinson's book afterward. It would also be pretty creepy and mentally detrimental for him to do something like that in my opinion, regardless of how he felt about his universe's Ziyal. The Catacombs of Oralius Ziyal is a different woman. I'm glad the decision made sense to you.
It would've been very interesting to see him encountering those Bajorans. Unfortunately, the word limit made going into great depth impossible this time around. If Nerys Ghemor is ever up for a sequel, it's an intriguing idea, particularly also having Kira in the mix. I'd love to see her reaction to the AU Bajorans. Thanks for the idea and the review!
A future excerpt from 'Hunting Grounds' showing some of the more pleasant and congenial side of life aboard the Border Patrol vessel Kestrel. Ensign Noah Cutler finds himself invited to a poker game with some of the ship's most senior officers.

A friendlier game than the outright fleecing I was expecting, and a good description of what the ship has available for the crew to do in their off-hours. I could really see it all.
Author's Response:
Thank you Gojirob. I'm glad I conveyed what the ship has to offer. I can picture a lot of the ship myself in my head but sometimes getting that across can be forgotten or not achieved. I'm delighted you could see it and thank you for reading it.

I read a lot of manga, and that was highly reminiscent of an animanga first meeting, which is a compliment. It had a resignatiion to a chaotic day and them using one such incident to find a little comfort and maybe companionship. A terrific little story.

Well, thank you for the compliment and the review!

You kept to one of the best traditions of daikaiju eiga - that the monster's appearances are actually few and ferocious, and to those on the ground, absolutely terrifying. You also picked up on one of my themes in the ADU - dithering in the face of an obvious threat. I am greatly honored to have my cycle inspire a story of this quality and depth. Excellent!
Author's Response: Thank you, Gojirob, I'm glad you liked it! :) Yes, hesitating in the face of an obvious threat. I knew that with the culture I created for the Mrall'Orion and of what we saw in TOS, that that theme would be especially true. I'm happy I lived up to the ADU standards. ;)
