52, mother of three.  Live in PA, have been a die-hard TOS fan since I was 11 and saw my first episode 'A Private Little War'.   I'm particularly partial to the Kirk-Spock-McCoy friendship (no slash here), so most of my work centers around this.

I've had no formal training, never took writing classes, nor had a burning desire to put pen to paper since childhood.  Outside of assignments for school, I'd never written anything in my life until early 2009, when two other Trek-author friends dared me to try my hand at fan fiction - something I was convinced I simply couldn't do.

Well, apparently they knew better than me. ;-)  Since then I've penned 60 stories, with more in the works.  Just want to say thanks to two wonderful ladies who helped me discover a side of myself I never knew was there. :D

Since I've become more prolific than I ever intended, here's a list of my works, in chronological order within TOS as well as my own 'fanon':

Matters of the Vulcan Heart

Childhood's End
The Ruthless Hand of Man

Summary: Feature

An entry for the TrekBBS challenge in November 2008. The theme of the challenge was 'survival'.

This short focuses on a chapter of history from Caitlyn Ryan's past, a character who appears in my USS ACCIPITER series.

During the Cardassian / Federation wars a Federation crew are captured and endure a living hell in a secret Cardassian prison camp.

Ouch, MF!  That was extremely difficult to read (in terms of content; the prose was beautiful and haunting and quite evocative of the grim picture you were painting).  You did forewarn, so I knew what I was in for, but couldn't stop once I started, so compelling did I find it.

It makes me want to know more about Caitlyn - who she was before, and who she became after this incident.  I sincerely hope you do continue to expand on her story.

I love how she turned the tables at the end, and I think the theme of 'what are you?' ran very well throughout the piece.  She kept trying to figure out what her captor wanted to hear at first, but then started questioning herself, and I think the answer surprised not only her, but her tormentor as well, for the answer was 'the victor' - not at all what he expected to hear, I'm sure.

Very well done.

Author's Response:

Wow, thank you so much for the review and kind words Cuppy. It means a lot to hear you found it haunting and compelling. I did in fact expand some on the story as had always been the intention. Here is the expanded but as yet unfinished story: A Question of Survival It of course has more of the hard aspects to read but we also get flashbacks telling us something of who she was before hand and how Caityln was formed by her parents quite early on.

Then there are the stories of Cyste Ryaenn who works as a re-imagined Caitlyn Ryan post-freedom and post-Dominion War.

Aegolius Harrier - Forged In Ice - Part One and Aegolius Harrier - Forged In Ice - Part Two -- Duels

She's a slightly different take on the Caitlyn character - for one she's Andorian/Aenar and gets her own command. In my mind almost AU in that one lives and the other dies in their respective stories. Here we see Cyste Ryaenn take command of her own ship but of all things gets assigned to the relief missions to a post war Cardassia - if she can get her weathered and down on its luck crew and ship out of spacedock that is.

Wow, this was interesting. Reminiscent of Shirley Maiewski's brilliant piece 'Mind Sifter', but much darker. Maybe the part left behind was his 'wolf' from 'Enemy Within'? A chilling story to say the least...

Author's Response: Inspired by 'Mind Sifter' which I have read a dozen times.

This story made me grin! Now that we have email and IM's, it's so great to see it incorporated into the Trek universe. And they would all chat like that, we just know it ;-). I loved having characters from published fiction included (just enriches the Trek universe IMO) and the nod to James Blish cracked me up! Great feel-good story.

Author's Response: Thanks! I'm sure on a ship that big, with such a regulated work schedule, messaging systems would play a big part in peoples' days. And agreed on the published-fiction characters, especially Snanngfashtalli. One of these days I'm going to work Ensign Naraht in. *wink* Glad you liked the story!

Just stumbled across this, and it was a gem!  So nice to see the 'big four' in a moment of quiet and relaxation, away from all the angst and frenetic moments we are used to.  And yet, in spite of the levity, there were some angsty moments interspersed throughout.

All four of them rang true to character:  Sulu unsure of which of his hobbies to pursue at the moment; Uhura wanting to mother them all; Scotty only getting animated when his 'bairns' were mentioned, and Chekov soldiering on despite being ill.

It was a pleasure to read.  Thanks!

Anna, words fail me at the moment. I am utterly and completely drained, still trying to process the magnitude of what I just read. At the end, my eyes were burning, although no tears fell, my throat tight and closed, my only coherent thought being 'Yes!! This is exactly how the three were at the beginning of TMP. You have somehow managed to make sense of that which bothered me for years!!' How could all that was right have gone so horribly wrong, for the three of them to be where they were physically, spiritually and emotionally at the beginning of that movie? You have done it, Anna - made me understand finally that which has been incomprehensible all these years. I told you, I saw TMP when it came out in 1979, at the tender age of 17, and did not watch that movie again until about a year ago. It always made me profoundly sad for reasons I did not fully comprehend, and you have remarkably managed to make sense of the incomprehensible. Once again, I find myself speechless and reeling at the end of one of your masterpieces. I bow to you...and know not what else to say...except my heartfelt thanks!

Author's Response: Wow, Cuppy. I am honored that you feel this way about my work. Just remember what I said about canon. Its creator I am not. ;-) This is just *one* possible explanation. Thank you very much for your support and kind words. I'm glad you liked it in the end. ;-)

Summary: Past Featured Story

(2245 - 2254) This is a very intense first-person POV story from the perspective of the free agent who acts as the go-between from Scott to the rebellion while he's stationed on Earth. Starting with the free agent's twisted one-sided obsession with a shadow, this story's very dark in the beginning, but it certainly isn't all dark and misery -- as time goes on, things change. This story is a heart-breaker. There's no easy way to sum it up, but if there's one thing you can call it, you can call it very human. Pay attention to my warnings, though, please.

Oh Steff!  This was so painful to read.  No wonder it wrecked you.

These absolutely aren't the guys from Arc of the Wolf...and yet they are.  Shadow versions of those men we know and love, but so very messed up.  Yet we see elements of those men - Corry's tremendous capacity for love; his care and concern for someone who's  become important to him, even if the feelings aren't reciprocated.  And Scotty's stand-offishness, taken to the Nth degree.

But that's what makes this so gut-wrenching - are they?  The Shadow doesn't show any feeling, any emotion, but why else would he have agreed to Corry's demands - the one minute, the one night, being his bodyguard?  And yet, he still maintains distance (he wouldn't allow himself to be comrpomised).  The implication here is physical compromise, but I really believe it's emotional compromise.  After he lost Jenna it destroyed him; destroyed the man he once was, morphing him into this cold, calculating, emotionless, unsentimental automaton, more for his own emotional stability and sanity than anything else. He would never allow himself to go down that road of caring for someone ever again - be it in the capacity of friend, brother, lover, etc.

And yet, Corry has seen this emotional side The Shadow keeps hidden so well.  And Corry is a lover, a protector (at least emotionally if not physically) so where will this take his feelings for The Shadow now?  And more importantly, will The Shadow allow it?  Powerful, gripping stuff...

Author's Response: The ending hurt so bad that every single piece I wrote after it, about anything in this universe, felt like a knife to the heart. And initially, Scott agreed to the demands because they cost him very little, and Andy was, frankly, a good courier and useful. Nothing more than that. He weighed Andy's measure, and decided he wasn't a threat, but he was useful. The time was just time. So, it was a fair price to pay. Scott turned himself into this for a singular purpose; that's what happens in the Main Arc. It really wasn't Scott clawing that wall, it was the ghost of the boy who died there, screaming for George Kirk to quit, pleading, begging, until he broke. There wasn't any hidden well-spring of warmth in him. Until Andy.

Reviewer: Lil black dog Signed
Date: 31 May 2013 Title: Chapter 2: Part II

This was heart-wrenching.  To learn the history behind what turned Scott into the shadow, and to see Andy's desperate (albeit hopeless) bid, to reach the echoes of the man Scott once was.

He's trying so hard - stayed clean and sober, because it almost seemed like Andy knew that's what Scott wanted, and expected of him, but the cool detachment is still there.  Despite his screwed up family life in this universe it seems that Andy is craving that familial closeness and is hoping to recapture it with Scott - when Andy says he loves him, I get the vibe of brotherly, platonic love, not physical love.  Andy wants to share that with Scott, and give back the familial love Scott lost when members of his family were killed, and others sent into hiding for their own protection.

But I get the feeling Andy is fooling himself.  I think that capacity for love was burnt out of Scott at age seventeen, and nothing (or no one) will be able to rekindle it again.  I could be wrong though...there's only one way to find out.

Author's Response: ::chuckles:: It was an unconditional love, no doubt. But it definitely wasn't a platonic one in this universe. Andy did want him, absolutely physically. Andy wanted him as a lover, an equal, as something bright to burn alongside of, to pull him out of the ashes, and you know, I think if he'd had the time, he might have even been able to. But your review was definitely fascinating, in its speculations, and thank you for it!

Reviewer: Lil black dog Signed
Date: 31 May 2013 Title: Chapter 3: Part III

This line sums up everything they did to him; what the Empire and Starfleet took from him:

"Care about nothin' they can use against you," he says. Then he closes his eyes for a moment, and I hear and see that sad certainty and it hurts so bad. Then he looks at me again, and quieter says, "Love nothin' they can take from you."

As much as I hate it I was right - nothing or no one can rekindle that ember.  It's all cold ashes now, just as my heart is at this moment...

Author's Response: Except, you weren't quite. ;)

And I know he's explaining why. And my eyes are burning, and I'm scared, I'm terrified, but I cling to that, just like I clung to him that last night on the Bearclaw, and I have to swallow before I can reply, "They can't take me from you now."

He tips his head to the side, regards me, and that sorrow's for me. That warmth is for me.

He nods once. "I know."

Andy did get to him. There was nothing they left of Scott, after Jenna, but in the end, in Andy's last minutes, he had that warmth in the ash, that warmth he revived, and it was his. And Scott never, ever forgot him. Thanks so much for reading; I ken this isn't usually your kind of thing, but I definitely appreciate it.

Wow Mistral, that was quite an interesting take on a 'ghost story.'  I must admit that from the appearance of the first 'mystery guest' I figured out who was inside, but not why these 'creatures' were appearing.

Nice work on the aliens responsible.  We tend to view things through the color palette of human experience, and forget that there are infinite possibilities for life out there that might function contrary to what we consider the norm.

I can see why this story won the prize, for while all the various cameos made me grin, there was still that underlying current of unease and dread as to exactly what this object was, and could it pose a real threat to the ship and her crew.  Very nice work!

Author's Response: After years to think about it-best response. Thank you.

Nope; turns out I lied - I did miss this one.  All I can say is WOW Mistral!  You know I'm a TOS girl, so I'm only peripherally familiar with many of the people here, but boy did it ever resonate in spite of that.  I admit to not having the first clue as to who Boothby was, but after trolling MA, it all fell into place.

This worked on so many levels.  The prose was absolutely beautiful, and haunting, evoking clear, strong and heartwrenching images of the destruction.  All the protagonists' reactions were clearly drawn as well.

But for me, it touched me because it represents the embodiment of my favorite Trek quote ever; words spoken by McCoy in the TOS episode 'Balance of Terror':  "In all the galaxy there is a mathematical probability of over three million Earth-type planets.  And in all the universe, three million million galaxies just like this one.  And in all of that, and perhaps more, only one of each of us."

In other words, even though we may not be world leaders, or pioneers, or scientific geniuses, we all matter; are all important in the grand scheme of things, and all have worthy contributions to make whether they touch one person or millions.  This story illustrated this idea beautifully.  An exceptional work, and probably my favorite one of yours to date, with 'The Revenant' a close second.

Thanks for this gorgeous, moving tale.

Summary: (2237 - 2238) - A look at Scotty from fifteen through sixteen; how he gets into the idea of testing the Perera Field Theory mentioned in the novel Kobayashi Maru, as well as how he eventually gets the notion to go into Starfleet, all from the point of view of someone who has more in common with him than just a few coincidental traits. And how that person eventually comes to terms with the connection.

This backstory on Scotty was beautifully written. I so enjoy it when authors add depth and meaning to the character by fleshing out the early parts of their history. A lot of what you have in here lends itself well to explain the character traits we see in the Scotty of TOS era. Thanks, as always, Steff. Scotty is usually not my guy, but this story did captivate me. McCoy is your other favorite character to write - perhaps something on his early years is in the works? ;-)

Author's Response: It's only part of a broad arc of his life, but I was happy with how it came out. LOL! I suppose half my mission in writing is making Scotty everyone's guy -- explaining him on a human level. Or, rather, asking the reticent SOB questions and hoping he provides answers. As to McCoy... I do love him, and he's always been my second favorite of the TOS crew, but I don't foresee myself spending nearly the same amount of time on him. Unlike Scott, a lot of McCoy's history is laid out. But here's a question -- why don't you do it? ;-) Why not sit down and see what the young Leonard was made of? You're certainly qualified to write... why not?

This is a great start, Mike for exploring how and why the Constitution-class starship came into being.  The interview style of this piece works very well - a chance to impart information propmted by answers to questions posed by the interviewer.

Your attention to detail with regard to naval tradition is stunning - kudos on that!  There are readers for whom these traditions and rules might not be commom knowledge, and this is a clever way to provide them with that information without this reading like a textbook. ;-)

It's always a good thing when a story is fun to read and teaches us something to boot.  You've succeeded very well on both fronts! :D
