Chapter 1: Chapter 1
Nope; turns out I lied - I did miss this one. All I can say is WOW Mistral! You know I'm a TOS girl, so I'm only peripherally familiar with many of the people here, but boy did it ever resonate in spite of that. I admit to not having the first clue as to who Boothby was, but after trolling MA, it all fell into place.
This worked on so many levels. The prose was absolutely beautiful, and haunting, evoking clear, strong and heartwrenching images of the destruction. All the protagonists' reactions were clearly drawn as well.
But for me, it touched me because it represents the embodiment of my favorite Trek quote ever; words spoken by McCoy in the TOS episode 'Balance of Terror': "In all the galaxy there is a mathematical probability of over three million Earth-type planets. And in all the universe, three million million galaxies just like this one. And in all of that, and perhaps more, only one of each of us."
In other words, even though we may not be world leaders, or pioneers, or scientific geniuses, we all matter; are all important in the grand scheme of things, and all have worthy contributions to make whether they touch one person or millions. This story illustrated this idea beautifully. An exceptional work, and probably my favorite one of yours to date, with 'The Revenant' a close second.
Thanks for this gorgeous, moving tale.
