Bio: I've loved Star Trek most of my life. Growing up, I pretty much lived and breathed the original series. I can remember getting in trouble for sneaking out of bed to watch reruns on late night TV. It was the first TV show that ever made me cry.

Deep Space 9 made me fall in love with Trek all over again, for different reasons. Of all the Trek races, the one that seized my imagination the most was the Cardassians. As is usual for me, I found the ambiguous villains and gray (literally) anti-heroes more compelling than the supposed good guys. It's a theme I'll probably explore in one way or another all my life.

Ambiguity is a comfortable state for me, my natural state: neither black nor white, good nor evil, straight nor gay. I prefer the shades of gray.

Ut oh, Maren's in tttrrroouubbbllleeeee! I'm glad she survived the encounter, though. She's lucky, and I can't see an honorable Andorian doing any less than Telek did. It's a good thing he did, too.

Poor Icheb, in the clutches of who knows who for who knows what purpose. Very taut and tense chapter throughout. It may have hurt your head, but it was a damned fun read!

Author's Response:

Glad you liked it, PSGarak.  Maren's in trouble in more ways than one.  Head injury, and now she's going to have to explain to the captain why she did things the way she did.  As far as Telek goes, he's definitely on the badass side for an engineer.  Don't underestimate Andorians.  Have you ever seen an Andorian Borg drone?  I haven't.  Doesn't mean they don't exist, but Telek is not one of them, and thanks to him, neither is Maren -- take that, Borg Collective!

Yeah, poor Icheb doesn't even know what's going on yet.  He's in for a nasty surprise when he wakes up.

Thanks for the review!

This was a really intriguing psychological study of two enemies who are more similar than they would care to admit and yet possessing of a few key fundamental differences that virtually ensure they will never see eye to eye. The claustrophobic sense of being a lab rat kept the tension ratcheted high throughout. I really enjoyed this.

Deliciously creepy beginning. You can't go wrong when you start off with a space version of Edgar Allen Poe's greatest fear. Can't wait to see where you take this!

Author's Response:

Oh the biggest heepy geepy ever that! The mere thought of it! Yuk. Hence why I had to get him out of there quick sharp. A bit like Garak in that I don't find tight spaces condusive to my health. Hope the direction suited and worked out. The first part is different in tone to the rest and so the story may suffer as a result.

Sorry, dreadful pun I know but it wasn't mine it was Keresh's! Well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. Thanks for reading and reviewing. The ending is a little rushed but opted to go for a frantic pace in order to keep the story going.

I'm glad I finally got caught up and could read this. Really touching and chilling at the same time. I very much felt for the plight of the students and of Dukat. Knowing what is to come made it all the more poignant. I also have to say that having a bipolar cousin, as we've talked about a bit, gave me a deep appreciation for the ordeal Dukat went through at the onset of his illness. I appreciate the sensitive way in which you handled the theme, and the accuracy, both of his reactions and the family. Very well done.

Author's Response:

Thank you very much for your review. :-)

I am particularly gratified to know that you felt I was able to write Dukat's ordeal in a realistic manner.  Our discussion most certainly helped my focus and I appreciate your willingness to speak about what you witnessed.

I found myself very swept along by the narrative. The first moments of the invasion rang very true, the shock and disbelief at the worsening horrors and conditions all around followed by the will and need to take action to survive. I find myself feeling sorry for this young Dukat, to be thrust so quickly into circumstances that will force him to grow up long before he expected. And yet, knowing he's equal to the task, I'm interested to see how that develops.

Author's Response:

I'm so glad you liked it. :-)

You're very right that he has to grow up a lot faster than expected--especially given the way Cardassian culture (well, city-dwelling culture) sees his legal status at this time; that's a good point.

I had a teacher like this growing up, someone who adored bullying the students and then retreating to the claim that she was just "trying to improve" us. The fact of the matter is that some people simply don't belong in a position of authority. I really liked her emotional responses to running into this man. It rang so true.

Wow, really amazing. Also, a good insight into John's character. A lot of that happy-go-lucky charm hides a well of pain, as is often the case. You capture the realities of living with an addicted parent really well. I'm extremely impressed.

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review and compliment.  John definitely uses his charm to hide a lot of his past hurt, but he's also a strong person who has worked hard to move past that hurt.  At eighteen, though, he wasn't quite there yet.

Rebek's voice and vision capture the moment with crystal, unsentimental clarity and yet are no less powerful in emotional effect because of it. I'd say I thoroughly enjoyed this, and from the writing standpoint I mean it. I just hate to see Cardassia taking such a beating. Well done.

Author's Response:

Thank you so much for reading--and indeed, it was a painful thing to write.

I can tell you that Rebek feels and grieves this very, very deeply--but she's leaving this log as clear as she can because she believes she may die in the rebellion (or if it fails, be executed afterwards) and she wants her chance to explain why.

I liked the pacing of this, the way it went back and forth and how the pieces slowly fell into place. I knew there was trouble when the antenna was found and bigger trouble when the detective spun a dial on the side of what looked like a cell phone. At least there was nothing left behind afterward to alter the time line TOO tremendously much.

Author's Response: Thank you, I had a heck of a time getting it done but when I saw the theme I couldn't NOT enter. I love time travel. Oddly-I had no ending when I started. I just trusted that something would come to me. Shand and Torres usually bring something out, even if it isn't what I had in mind, so I just let them go and do their thing.

I'm not yet familiar with the larger universe in which this was set, but I found myself empathizing greatly with Peter. That was such a confusing and terrible thing to go through, and to have it end in such a way with such a bleak mid-term outcome makes it that much worse. It's a definite fit for the challenge, for sure!

Author's Response: Thanks. I even thought of calling this story 'Thunder Child'. Peter will one day stand with his heroes, but that time is not yet. He and another character are the MS's of this series, but only technically. They will fumble, sometimes badly, and true to the anime/manga tales that helped inspire me (along with ST itself, natch), more than once, they will walk blindly into a trap while not realizing it at all.

Author's Response: Thanks. This is one of those eps, that, when I post against it, invariably pulls in the auto-defenders ('But It's Realistic!). Whatever the people chose, Alixius should never have been permitted to leave with a serene smile--by that I mean plot-wise, not someone attacking her. I really liked this one, and as much as I find Neelix to be an annoying scab, in some ways the analogy fit.
