Summary: When Q lost his powers in the episode "Deja Q", he never got them back. Three years later, Q is living aboard a starbase, working as a scientific advisor to the Federation in exchange for protection from his enemies... and about to kill himself in despair at what his life has become. Aside from Q himself and a flashback sequence aboard the Enterprise, all characters are mine.

Additional note, now that I've updated the ratings for Part IV: This is not a story about sex, but sex is part of being human, so I don't do maidenly fadeouts. It's also not a story about violence, but when part of the point is that a guy is a magnet for Very Bad Things happening because his bad behavior from the past several million years is catching up with him, I'm not going to pull punches there either. I've updated the rating to Mature Audiences because of Part IV, which contains sex and violence, but most of that stuff doesn't start showing up until then.

Summary: Past Featured Story

The USS Kestrel, an aging Miranda class, serving as part of the Border Service has the thankless task of patrolling some of the murkier corners of the Federation. As the seat of Federation power in a dangerous and wild region of space, the Kestrel acts to paraphrase her firebrand captain, Captain Gregory McGregor, as the rule and the law, the line in the sand, the first and last line of defense for the Federation.

"So we can't be calling in the cavalry at the drop of a hat. We are the cavalry. We stand the line, we duke it out, we shout them down, we clean their windscreens, and we set out the welcome mat. It's not all bad you know."

This is the first story featuring the ramshackle, rough and ready crew of the Kestrel. I'd call them an unorthodox crew but hey isn't every crew unorthodox in their own way!

Led by the acerbic, sarcastic, bombastic, over the top, pain-in-the-ass, coarse and unprofessional Captain Gregory McGregor. Just the type of behaviour to get stuff on the border done! There's no time for Jean-Luc's niceties here!

The Border Dogs might be seen as the ‘poor cousins' of the Fleet and the Miranda might be seen as the ‘Ford pick-up of Starfleet' but the Kestrel in the humble opinion of her Captain shows the Fleeters how to do things the proper way.

Summary: In 2413 the United Federation of Planets and its allies are once again at war. Exploration is on the back-burner as Starfleet concentrates on defending the Federation’s heart from a blood-thirsty and violent species from the Gamma Quadrant as well as a growing threat from a well-organized militia trying to disrupt a Romulan-Reman accord.

Now odd occurrences at its back door begin to cause the UFP alarm, right on the eve of the budding peace initiative in the region. Something or someone is murdering supply ship commanders near the remote and normally calm edges of the Romulan Neutral Zone. The only eye-witness accounts describe the attackers as being ghosts.

Fresh off her fiery stint as the captain of a small Starfleet defense ship, the newly ordained commanding officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise-G, along with a tenacious band of defense ship commanders, are burdened with a task that will either bring peace to the region or will let the enemy run unabated through the galaxy, destroying everything the UFP holds dear…

…and really, what would that do to the family name?
