Early in the 25th Century, several diminutive hand-carved idols begin to disappear from small-time dealers, collectors and museums across the Beta Quadrant. No one really takes notice of the issue as the idols were not considered very valuable.
In contrast, another set of idols – priceless rarities by all accounts – actually begin to appear on planets to which the UFP had never ventured - at least that’s what the UFP thought until it’s discovered that the idols discovered on those “uncharted” planets actually belonged to one Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
The Daystrom Institute’s best and brightest archaeologist, Dr. William T. (Bill) Riker, Jr. is summoned to the outskirts of Klingon territory to investigate the strange discoveries, but before he can undertake solving the mystery the political foundation of the quadrant is shaken when word is received that the Thraiin militia have assassinated the Romulan Praetor. Worse, the Federation Ambassador to the Romulan Star Empire – Bill's mother
– is reported as missing immediately following the melee.
One clue arises; a small, practically worthless black idol appears mysteriously in his quarters with a hint that it will lead him to his mother, and the discovery that the little black idols were not as worthless as once thought…and in the hands of the wrong people, they could lead to the destruction of the Romulan Star Empire and threaten the existence of the UFP itself.
