The USS Kestrel, an ageing Miranda class, serving as part of the Border Service has the thankless task of patrolling some of the murkier corners of the Federation.                                                        As the seat of Federation power in a dangerous and wild region of space, the Kestrel acts to paraphrase her firebrand captain, Captain Gregory McGregor, 'as the rule and the law, the line in the sand, the first and last line of defence for the Federation'. They can't call in the cavalry because they are the cavalry. They stand the line, they duke it out, they shout them down; they are the Border Patrol Service, otherwise known as the Border Dogs.                                                                                                       A ramshackle, rough and ready crew, led by the acerbic, sarcastic, bombastic, over the top, pain-in-the-ass, coarse and unprofessional Captain Gregory McGregor. Just the type of behaviour to get stuff on the border done! There's no time for Jean-Luc's niceties here!
The Border Dogs might be seen as the ‘poor cousins' of the Fleet and the Miranda might be seen as the ‘Ford pick-up of Starfleet' but the Kestrel in the humble opinion of her Captain shows the Fleeters how to do things the proper way.

As species grow up together, attend school together and work together, curiosity is bound to get the best of someone. What happens when species -- and sometimes rather dissimilar ones -- date, marry and have children?

This is an alternate version of my series Shaping a Cardassian, which takes place in the reality created in the film Star Trek 2009.

Who are the Cardassians? What drives them? Do they have dreams? Are they all brutal conquerors? Or perhaps there are dreamers among them, too?

The stories belong to my Shaping a Cardassian universe. The shows' canon is sacred, but what happens after the finale of Deep Space Nine is my own continuation. There are some elements borrowed from Treklit, but for the most part post-Dominion War timeline is my own.

In the spirit of fun and adventure I humbly extend a challenge to the many fine writers of Ad Astra: Write a story that is within the universe of Unsung Heroes. It’s a round robin event organized as an open series meaning that you can post your own stories to the series, the various stories adding together like the chapters of a book. Prequel, sequel, TNG mirror universe – the galaxy’s the limit!

The instructions are simple. Read Star Trek HQ first and then come up with your own story that plays within the same ‘virtual sandbox’. Some good ideas for additional stories might be: ‘What did Amy do next?’, or, ‘What happened to Doctor Dunmore when he returned to Starfleet Command?’

And what of our new enemy? Although little is known about him, his powers of creation and destruction are very real. Originating from an entirely new faction of the Borg, it appears that the collective has changed its views on the importance and role of the individual. Can this Borg Homunculus – this drone that is not a drone – spawn entire new cubes faster than Starfleet can scream retreat?
