However shortly after arriving, Ezri faces a new problem when a fleet of Cardassian warships arrive at DS9.

Upon being contacted by one of the ships, Ezri encounters Garak, the president of the Cardassian government and general commander-in-chief of the Cardassian Union. During a private meeting, Garak gives to Ezri a very unusual offer...

This soon morphs into Ezri's first mission as captain to carry out a daring rescue operation to free the prisoners on Tau Primia...

Summary: Season 2, 17th story

With DS9 surrounded by Romulan vessels, Ezri is embroiled in interplanetary politics and schemes when she enters into discussions with general Keelin, who commands the Romulan ships.

Complicating matters for Ezri is the coup in the Romulan Star Empire, and a defensive pact between the Breen and the Romulans. The Federation must either comply with Breen and Romulan demands or face an all out war.

While on the Breen homeworld, Kira and Odo are imprisoned with the rest of the Federation delegation, and they pass each hour waiting for whatever fate bestows upon them.

Ezri is then ordered to rescue Kira and Odo, and take the Defiant to the Breen homeworld. However the mission goes disastrously wrong, and with events spiralling out of control, war looks inevitable...

Ezri's hallucinations worsen, as the equilibrium between herself and Dax breaks down. While Bashir tries to find a cure to her mental problems, Ezri struggles to regain her equilibrium but to no success.
